About the City
Kolkata, often called the “City of Joy,” is one of India’s most vibrant and historic cities. Located on the eastern banks of the Hooghly River, it is the capital of West Bengal and a major cultural, educational, and commercial hub. Kolkata served as the capital of British India until 1911, and traces of colonial architecture remain visible in landmarks such as the Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
The city is renowned for its literary, artistic, and intellectual heritage, having produced Nobel laureates like Rabindranath Tagore, Amartya Sen, and Mother Teresa. Known as the cultural capital of India, Kolkata is famous for Durga Puja, a grand festival marked by dazzling pandals, art, and community celebrations. The city also boasts prestigious institutions like the Indian Museum, Presidency University, and the National Library.
Kolkata’s cuisine, particularly sweets like rasgulla and sandesh, and its passion for football and cricket add to its charm. Despite challenges such as overcrowding and traffic, the warmth of its people and the city’s unique blend of tradition and modernity make it special.
